When you want to sleep with me, I will carry you up the steep stairs of the cabin, while you clutch me like a baby. "

Luke, I promise you will always have shelter. I promise to feed you first, so you can sit with your chin on my knee and beg to share mine too. I will hook your leash around your neck whenever you tell me you need to feel the fresh air on your face. I will cover you with your fuzzy blue blanket on cold nights when the chill comes through the cracks around the window. I will take us to our beach in Brooklyn on Sunday mornings so you can chase geese out into the water and muddy your face picking up shellfish. I will drive three hours to the cabin where you will hunt for rabbits and drag sticks from the woods behind the shed, and we will share a grilled cheese or two along the way. When I go to Home Depot you can come too, happy to stare out the back window for my return across the parking lot. When you want to sleep with me, I will carry you up the steep stairs of the cabin, while you clutch me like a baby. I will wait patiently while you circle the bed to fall perfectly into the curve of my legs, and smile when I wake the next morning facing you across my pillow. I will do anything for your happiness, knowing it can never repay what you have given me in five short years, or even in these five long weeks. I am yours and you are mine, beautiful creature. I love you with a heart that you have filled, and I will never, ever leave you.
