sink

Updated: Aug 2, 2021

The concrete of the pool moved past me and I sank silently for a bit."

I fell into the Hutchings’ pool when I was two and a half, and remember watching the bubbles of my breath shoot out past my face and up over my head as I sank down into the water. It happened in slow motion. The concrete of the pool moved past me and I sank silently for a bit. Then hands grabbed my hair and shirt and pulled me straight up and out into the air like a fish, held me over the water for a second, then down to the patio. It was against the rules for me to jump from corner to corner and I knew that, but no one was around so I did it for awhile before I fell in. It is my earliest memory.
