His left eyelid wasn’t closing completely, distorting his always near-perfect vision and making it impossible to do what he loved most, drive his truck on Sundays to Cooks Falls... "

I was sitting with my dad in the outpatient recovery room of Wilson Hospital, waiting for a doctor to sign release papers. He had been admitted to the hospital only once before, in the 1950s, when his appendix was about to burst. Now, at 84, he had Graves’ disease. His left eyelid wasn’t closing completely, distorting his always near-perfect vision and making it impossible to do what he loved most, drive his truck on Sundays to Cooks Falls, the town in the Catskills where he had been a boy. We waited in a long moment of silence, nurses coming and going around us, machines pushed up and down the hallways. “You know,” he said, turning to me, “you never think you’re going to get old.”
